Kelly’s Birth of Waylon – Accidental Homebirth Story

I went to bed on the night of my due date thinking this baby is still at least a week away, but just after midnight I woke up to a strange pain. Didn’t think anything of it, so I went to the toilet to try and make it go away.

I tried for about 45 minutes to go back to sleep but I couldn’t really shake this pain or get comfortable so I tired the toilet again. Still no comfort came from that so I proceeded to wake my husband after 1am and said I have this weird pain that won’t go away I’m worried I might be in labour.

As we laid in bed talking we went through a plan of when we might leave, all the last minute things to put in my bag, what road to take to hospital as there was road works in every direction and we made a plan for our 2 year old.

Unsure what to do I decided to have a shower.

During my shower everything started to feel like labour. The niggly pain turned in to contractions. So I yelled out to my husband to call the hospital and just let them know we would be coming today as I was planning a water birth and wanted the birth suite with the pool.

After a long shower I continued to labour on our bedroom floor. I had popped the tens on and was using the little spiky wooden balls from my birth tool kit.

Time seemed to go really fast I continue to stay active leaning over my ball, standing a leaning in to my husband.

We called my mum around 3.30am to be there when our son woke up. When she arrived I explained to her what he needed and she could go back to bed.

Another hour had past with contractions getting more intense I was leaning into my husband when I felt a pop internally with the feeling to wee so I hoped back in the shower.

A few minutes later I had thrown up.

It was about 5am by now so my husbanded called Sarah to let her know to start heading over.

Things got really intense quickly with every contraction I could feel the pressure in my bum. Then I had a sudden realisation I wasn’t going to make it to the hospital there was no way I could get out the shower let alone sit in the car!

My husband got me back out the shower and was getting me dry, when said I have to push get me back in the shower. As I lent over the ball I just told my self to breathe through the feeling let your body do the work.

Ben frantically rang Sarah to see where she was, as Sarah came inside she could see it was to late and we weren’t going anywhere so she rang the ambulance. A few minutes later he was starting to crown.

She raced back out to the car to get her camera has I still managed to ask her mid contraction if she had her camera.

With in minutes our baby boy was here arriving at 6.01am with his dad thrown straight in the deep end to catch him. He was passed up to me and he started crying.

It was a relief we just sat there in absolute shock not knowing what just happened! Or what to do next. But our son was awake so we brought him in to meet his baby! That’s something I’ll never forget.

About 15 minutes later the ambulance arrived to find everyone happy and healthy. The crew gave us the once over and 25 minutes later I delivered the placenta. We just sat and soaked up that golden hour with a first feed and cuddles before having a shower and some breakfast then heading into the hospital.

By 1pm we were given the all clear and headed back home to the new way as a family of four.
