What to Wear for Your Maternity Photoshoot

Choosing what to wear for your maternity photoshoot can feel like one more thing to organise during pregnancy. You want to feel confident, comfortable and beautifully yourself, but knowing where to start can be overwhelming. The good news is that it doesn’t need to be complicated. With a few simple guidelines, you can create a timeless, flattering look that highlights your bump and photographs beautifully.

Whether your session is on the beach in Rockingham, outdoors around Baldivis, or in one of my favourite studio locations across Perth, these suggestions will help you feel relaxed and well prepared on the day.

And don’t forget, If you book a maternity shoot with me you’ll have complimentary access to my Client Wardrobe!

Start With Comfort First

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable. Your body is doing something incredible and your outfit should support that, not work against it. Look for pieces that:

  • sit comfortably over or under your bump
  • don’t cling in areas you feel self-conscious about
  • allow natural movement
  • won’t need constant adjusting

Choose Colours That Photograph Beautifully

Soft, neutral tones work best for maternity photography. They keep the focus on you, your connection and the shape of your bump. Consider:

  • creams, whites and oatmeal
  • blush, nude and warm muted tones
  • earthy browns, olive or sage
  • soft blue or muted grey

These shades work beautifully in nature based locations across Rockingham, Baldivis and Mandurah, and they pair well with your partner’s and children’s outfits without stealing the show.

Avoid overly bright colours or strong patterns. They can reflect colour onto your skin and distract from the emotion of the images.

Silhouettes That Highlight Your Bump

There are three main styles that typically photograph best:

01

Fitted dresses for classic bump definition

These gently hug your belly and show the full shape of your pregnancy in a very natural way.

02

Off-shoulder or deep V-necklines

These elongate your frame, draw attention upwards and add softness to your overall look.

03

Flowy, feminine gowns for movement

Chiffon, tulle, muslin or cotton voile create beautiful movement, especially during beach or sunset sessions.

If you’re unsure which style will flatter your shape the most, browse the Client Wardrobe and feel free to message me for personalised suggestions. Remember, Mother Mother Photography clients get complimentary wardrobe hire with every session!

Maternity Styling and Preparation Tips

What to Wear Underneath

What sits under your dress matters just as much as the dress itself.

  • Skin-coloured underwear is almost always the best option.
  • Avoid underwear with thick seams, bold colours or tight elastic.
  • If you’re wearing a fitted or sheer gown, consider seamless briefs or a G-string.
  • For off-shoulder dresses, choose a strapless bra or go braless if the fabric allows.

If you book a sheer or semi-sheer gown from my wardrobe, I’ll let you know exactly what will work best underneath.

Including Your Partner and Children

If your family is joining the session, aim for coordination rather than matching. Choose a colour palette and dress everyone in tones that sit well together.

Some quick family styling tips:

  • Keep patterns minimal and avoid logos
  • Choose natural fibres where possible
  • Think about how colours will look together when standing close
  • For young kids, dress them on location if possible to avoid spills or creases

You can send me photos of your outfit ideas before the session if you’d like support finalising your choices.

Hair, Makeup and Tanning

You don’t need professional hair and makeup for your session unless you genuinely enjoy that. Your maternity photoshoot should feel like you, not a version of you that requires hours of prep.

Here are a few guidelines from years of shooting:

  • Keep makeup natural and soft
  • Avoid heavy lashes or strong eyeshadow
  • Choose hairstyles that won’t be easily disrupted by wind
  • Skip fake tanning or body makeup, as it often photographs orange or green and can stain wardrobe pieces

Keep it simple. Keep it true to you.

What to Bring to Your Session

You don’t need much. Bringing a few simple items can help you feel prepared and relaxed:

  • Water
  • Lip balm
  • A light snack
  • A spare outfit for little ones
  • A hair tie or clip
  • A small towel if we are shooting at the beach

I will guide you through everything else on the day, including posing, lighting and direction. Your only job is to show up and enjoy the moment.
