How It Works
How It Works
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It works by sending gentle electrical pulses through electrode pads placed on the lower back, which can help reduce the intensity of labour sensations and provide a useful sense of comfort and focus.
Many women find TENS most helpful in early labour, but it can also be used throughout labour alongside other comfort measures such as movement, massage, breathwork, and position changes. It is commonly used at home, in hospital, at a birth centre, or during some inductions.
The Elle is designed specifically for labour and includes an easy-to-use boost button, allowing you to increase the intensity during contractions while keeping the lower setting in between.
Please note that TENS must not be used in water, so it will need to be removed before entering a shower, bath, or birth pool.

What’s the difference between the Elle and Obi TENS?
Both are labour TENS machines designed to provide natural, drug-free pain relief during labour.
The Elle is my more premium option and includes an easy-to-use boost button, making it a popular choice for women wanting something simple and intuitive to use during labour.
The Obi is a more budget-friendly option that still offers effective labour TENS support, but with a more basic design.
When should I book my TENS hire?
Most women book their TENS hire to begin from around 37 weeks so it is ready before labour starts. If your baby is expected earlier, or you are planning an induction or caesarean birth and would like to use TENS afterwards for afterpains, you may prefer to book earlier.
Can I use it in hospital?
Yes. The Elle TENS machine can be used in a range of birth settings, including hospital birth, birth centre, and homebirth. It is a portable option that can be used during labour as long as you are not in water.
Can I use it in water?
No. TENS must not be used in the shower, bath, or birth pool. It should be removed before entering water and can be reapplied afterwards if needed.
Can I use it after birth?
Some women choose to continue using TENS after birth for afterpains or postpartum cramping, including cramping that can happen during breastfeeding.
